Neuroendocrinology & Behavior Laboratory

There are sex differences in the rates and presentation of most psychiatric disorders. High levels of stress make psychiatric disorders worse. The Neuroendocrinology and Behavior Laboratory (NBL) uses a variety of techniques from behavioral neuroscience, neuroendocrinology, and cellular and molecular biology to identify neurobiological mechanisms by which stressor exposure can bias males and females towards different disease-relevant pathology.

Specific Research Interests Include

Early Life Adversity

The effects of early life adversity on steroid hormones, cognition, and motivated behavior in males and females

Arousal and Cognition

Sex differences in the effects of the stress neuropeptide, corticotropin releasing factor, on arousal and cognition

Our lab culture

Inclusivity and belonging

The Neuroendocrinology and Behavior lab is committed to increasing initiatives for expanding diversity and for creating a workspace where all lab members feel included and valued, regardless of their age, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, citizenship status, socioeconomic status, religion, sex, gender identity or expression of that identity, sexual orientation, able-bodiedness, or mental health status. To this end, we designate lab meetings to discuss strategies to improve inclusion in STEM and continue to educate ourselves via relevant literature and training, such as ADVANCE-IMPACT. We share our values and knowledge with the broader academic community when possible: see this commentary by Dr. Cuarenta and this paper by Dr. Bangasser.
